Should mine air supply be lost, the CoalSAFE Refuge uses liquid CO2 cylinders to power its internal life support systems (The MARCis™).

The smaller low-seam CoalSAFE models are fitted with a separately transportable cylinder rack - inserted into a compartment at the back of the refuge during normal transport and handling. Larger high-seam CoalSAFE models are fitted with a permanent cylinder storage compartment, accessible by door at the rear of the refuge, separate from the 'main' refuge. Both designs allow cylinders to be interchanged underground without difficulty for minimal downtime.

Both high and low seam CoalSAFE models store enough liquid CO2 to power the refuge's internal life support systems (The MARCis™) for up to 100hrs, standalone.
